What is pediatric Laparoscopy ?

Any surgery performed on kids and infants is categorised as pediatric Laparoscopy. In pediatric Laparoscopy, it is always the pediatric urologist who performs this delicate and specialised surgery. Before the arrival of laparoscopy technology, surgery for the kid was deemed as risky and time-consuming too. But this isn’t the case with pediatric Laparoscopy. A pediatric laparoscopy is performed through the laparoscope tube which has a camera and tools on one end.

The pediatric urologist sees the image of the internal urinary system and performs the surgery.

What is the process involved in pediatric Laparoscopy surgery ?

It is also commonly known as minimally invasive surgery as very few tools are used in this surgery. The tools which we use in pediatric laparoscopy is specifically designed for kids and infants. It is much smaller in size and fits wells in the kid’s small urinary systems. It is always performed under general anaesthesia and kids sleep throughout the operation. The steps for performing laparoscopy surgery are:

• Firstly a small tube with a camera and light on one end is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen.
• This shows the image of the urinary system on the screen. The pediatric urologist can see the abnormality in the organs like the kidney, bladder and ureter. This is not possible with traditional technology.
• If there is any tumour or inflammation in the kidney or any other organ. The tools cut the tumour and remove any blockages in the organs.
• Before the surgery, the internal area is filled with gas which expands the area. This allows the tools to move more easily in the urinary system.
• After the surgery, the urologist surgeons drain the gas, remove the tools and close the holes.
