pediatric urodynamics

What is pediatric urodynamics ?

These are specialised tests performed on newborn infants and young children. It is hard to diagnose any problem of the bladder without this test. In a pediatric urodynamics test, the pediatric urologist performs a series of tests on the bladder, urethra and pelvic floor muscles to determine the health of these essential organs. A urodynamic test is recommended to determine the urine storage, emptying process, proper urine flow and urethral sphincter muscle.

Why will my kid need to have a urodynamic test ?

We recommend the urodynamic test if the kid suffers from any urinary tract ailments like:

  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Posterior urethral valve.
  • Urethral strictures.
  • Bladder exstrophy.

In neurological conditions we suggest a urodynamic test for spinal ailments like spina bifida. This helps in determining the extent of damage to the internal organs like the Kidney and bladder.

How is a urodynamic test done ?

We recommend urodynamic testing before any surgery to determine the right line of treatment. There is no special planning and preparation needed for the kid to undergo urodynamic tests like:

  • Video urodynamic tests- A specialised tube is inserted inside the urinary system through the abdomen. This tube has a camera on one end and a light on the other. When the kid urinates this device takes the picture and video. This is done to monitor the bladder’s filling and emptying capacity in kids
  • Uroflowmetry- This is yet another test employed to measure urine flow from the bladder. A child urinates in the specially equipped tool which measures the urine’s amount and flow rates. The doctor sees the changes in the bladder system.
  • Cystometry- A test where a catheter plays the main role in analysing the pressure of the bladder. This tells about the bladder’s holding capacity and its elasticity. It also measures the abnormal muscle contraction which happens while bladder filling.

What is the aftercare tips for my kid?

It is necessary to follow these aftercare tips if a child has had a urodynamic test.

  • Drinking for more than 8- 16 every 2 hours.
  • Taking antibiotics to lower the risk of infection after the urodynamic test.
