In the fetus, the development of testis occurs within the first few months of pregnancy. At this stage, the testis moves from the lower belly into the scrotum in the womb. But the situation becomes reversed in undescended testis. Undescended testis is a congenital disorder of improper development of genital organs. In this, one or both of the testicles doesn’t descend in the scrotum.
Some of the prominent causes associated with undescended testis amongst infants are:
The best way to recognise the undescended testis is by:
If by the time the baby is 6 months the scrotum looks flat it is time to consult the specialist. Physical examination- The doctor examines the baby’s genitals by feeling the scrotum. If the testis has descended it will look bumpy and big but if it's small and flat looking. It means the baby is missing one or both testicles.
There are many ways to heal this condition thanks to the advancement of technology. It is possible to heal this ailment both surgically as well as non surgically. The type of treatment is dependent on the severity of the condition.
Hormonal treatment- This is the most optimum method for healing if the baby has a slight testis development. The HCG drug is injected into the body. It allows the testicles to move back into the scrotum.
Laparoscopic surgery- It is the minimally invasive form of surgery performed through tubes. A small laparoscope tube is inserted in the abdomen through the small incision. The tube moves the testicles into the scrotum and stitches them into the place. If the testicular tissue is damaged or dead, it removes these and heals the testicles.
