What is urinary tract infection?

Urinary tract infections are very uncommon in children but it does happen in the rarest of rare cases. A urinary system has kidneys, urethra, bladders and uretra. It is these organs which are affected in urinary tract infection. It is unique from other infections because it enters in our kid’s bodies through urethra and travels upto bladder where it gets multiplied.

  • Urine test- A child’s urine sample is sent for analysis to determine the trace of bacteria in the body. Before the test, genital area is cleaned and a urine sample is collected which gives a clear indication if a child has a UTI.
  • Performing laparoscopy- Its more effective than the traditional ultrasound. In laparoscopy, a telescope called cystoscopy with a camera on one end is passed through the child’s urethra and bladder. This shows the image of urethra and bladder interior on screen showing the location of obstruction in the Urinary tract system.
  • Using Antibiotics- The antibiotics we give on the basis of the severity of UTI are trimethoprim, cephalexin and cefixime. Its cycle is dependent on the severity of UTI in kids and is decided by the doctor.
